Wreckage of WW II plane unearthed in center of St. Petersburg


Military bomb disposal specialists have been brought to scene to examine the wreckage and the area for potentially explosive items.

ST. PETERSBURG, April 28. /TASS/. The wreckage of a World War II plane has been found during earthmoving work on the premises of the Lenexpo exhibition complex in the center of St. Petesrburg, the press service of the Western Military District has told TASS.

"In the process of construction work on Lenexpo premises fragments of a plane’s fuselage have been unearthed. Further examination found that the plane’s wreckage is entirely in the ground below the surface. Military bomb disposal specialists have been brought to scene to examine the wreckage and the area for potentially explosive items. Also, specialists will try to identify the crew," the source said.

He speculated it was a Baltic Fleet naval aircraft, which participated in the defense of Leningrad. After examination the plane will be dispatched for restoration.
