MOSCOW, May 22. /TASS/. More than 9.1 million people took part in advance voting organized on Sunday by the ruling United Russia party to select candidates for its nominees at the forthcoming elections to the Russian State Duma lower parliament house, the party’s general council secretary Sergei Neverov told journalists citing preliminary data.
"We will verify the final figure but as of now the turnout is 9.187 million people," he said.
According to Neverov, the lowest turnout was reported in
the northwestern Arkhangelsk region (under three percent). The highest turnout
was in the Republic of Mordovia (14.13%).
He said preliminary results of the voting will be
announced on May 27.
United Russia held advance voting across Russia, the
so-called primaries, to select its nominees for candidates running for
parliamentary seats at the forthcoming elections. A total of 2,781 candidates
took part in the polls.
The voting results will be materialized in a list of the
party candidates to run for parliament seat in one-seat constituencies and
regional party tickets of the most popular candidates. The lists will be
endorsed at a party congress in June.
Elections to the 450-seat Russian State Duma will be
held on September 18 under a mixed system: 225 lawmakers will be elected in
one-seat constituencies and another 225 will be elected by party tickets.
