A US court’s decision to sentence Russian national Maria Butina to 18 months in
prison is a travesty of justice aimed at saving face, Russian President
Vladimir Putin said at a press conference wrapping up his visit to China.
"The Foreign
Ministry has already issued a statement commenting on Butina’s 18-month prison
sentence. In my view, and this is what the Foreign Ministry said in its
statement: this is a travesty of justice," Putin said. "It is unclear
what she has been convicted of, what crime she committed," he added.
On Friday, a court in
Washington sentenced Butina to 18 years behind bars.
