For many months, Ukrainian authorities have violated the Universal Declaration of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees the right of everyone to receive and impart information.

Professional activities of editors, journalists and bloggers became deadly in Ukraine.

The death of journalist Gongadze turned Leonid Kuchma, then President of Ukraine, into a pariah among European politicians. But in the days of Kuchma and Yanukovich it was hard to imagine the prosecution of journalists for their opposition views.

Today, the death of many journalists and the arrest of opposition members of the media in Ukraine does not cause a similar response from the world community.

The arrest of the journalist Kotsaba for his anti-war stance, arrest of the journalist Mashkin for an interview with Russian television, arrest of editor Bondarchuk for placement of an interview in his newspaper, the arrest of Sergei Yudaev and Dmitry Pigarev of Ukrainian human rights newspaper, and other arrests of dozens of journalists have no condemnation in Europe.

The death of opposition figures such as Kalashnikov, provoked by placing their personal data on the site “Peacemaker”, the death of many journalists, such as Sergey Dolgov, the founder of the newspaper “Back in the USSR”, does not stirred any attantion from the world community.

The Union of Political Prisoners and Political Refugees of Ukraine states: the toughest totalitarian regime of suppression of dissent of thought by every means, including physical destruction of opponents, now rules in Ukraine.

However, the destruction of the world system of rights and freedoms is threatened in general by the spread of impunity for crimes against freedom of expression around the world.

We call on the European Court of Human Rights to raise its voice in defense of human rights in Ukraine.
We are motivated by solidarity and understanding of the fact that the freedom of expression is the key to the protection of civil rights and the preservation of democracy.
