Ukraine’s National Guard Building Fortifications on Donetsk Border: DPR Militia

DONETSK, October 11 (RIA Novosti) - The National Guard of Ukraine is building fortifications on the border between Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions, a spokesman for the Donetsk People's Republic militia told RIA Novosti on Saturday.

Ukrainian forces are using construction equipment to dig moats and build concrete barriers between the Petropavlivka district in Dnipropetrovsk and the Dobropillia district in Donetsk, a spokesman for the DPR militia said, adding that "local residents have been mobilized to take part in the construction".

According to a statement published on the official website of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko Friday, three so-called defense lines are being created in the Donetsk region to ensure "the peaceful life of Ukrainians".

An armed conflict in Ukraine's southeast began in spring as Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters in the region. The sides agreed on a ceasefire on September 5, at a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. Both sides have subsequently accused each other of violating the agreement.
